BROADCASTING AND MEDIA RELATIONS ASSISTANT

WHO WE ARE
– The Kansas City Monarchs are a professional baseball team in the 12-team American Association, an MLB Partner League. 2024 will be our 21st season at the 5,600-seat Legends Field in Kansas City, Kansas.
– In 2020, the team partnered with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and changed their name from the T-Bones to the Monarchs in honor of the legendary Negro League franchise that played from 1920 to 1965.
– The Monarchs are the reigning champions of the American Association, winning the 2023 title with a roster that featured nine former major leaguers.
– The Monarchs finished with the best record in the AAPB each of the last three years. They have won the league title in three of the past five seasons (not counting 2020 when they did not field a team due to COVID).

RESPONSIBILITIES
(include but are not limited to)

Writing
– Write regular feature stories on team for web/broadcast/media partners
– Contribute written portions of daily media game notes.
– Write a nightly game recap after each home game

Media Relations
– Assist in coordinating media requests for players and staff
– Assist in attending to the needs of media members at the ballpark on game days
– Write certain team press releases for player signings, ballpark announcements, events, etc.

Broadcasting
– Broadcast partner for home games (play-by-play for 4th, 5th and 6th innings, color commentary for all other innings)
– Co-host pre-game show for home games
– Contribute regular graphics for broadcast and social media
– Edit video for player highlight packages, reports, etc.

Other duties depending on experience

REQUIRED SKILLS

– Writing: Experience writing for news or sports (features or reporting are greatly preferred over opinion pieces)
– Storytelling: Knowledge of what makes a good story and how that story can connect with fans
– Media relations: Communication and cooperation skills with media and colleagues in the press box
– Broadcasting: Prior experience in play-by-play (baseball preferred)
– Video editing: Basic knowledge of editing, experience with Adobe Premiere Pro or similar software preferred

PREFERRED SKILLS

– Graphic design: Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or similar software
– Social media content production
– On-camera broadcasting/show hosting
– Whatever else you think would help us grow our fan base!

Compensation: hourly minimum wage
