Milkmen Withstand Late Kansas City Rally

Milwaukee, WI — After being down five runs, the Monarchs tied up the game in the eighth, but Milwaukee was able to secure one final tally to win 7-6 on Sunday afternoon.

The Milkmen wasted no time getting on the board and jumped out to a three-run advantage in the first. Yordys Valdes walked and then raced home on a line drive from Delvin Perez. Andy Blake followed it up with a base while Jeremy Rivas ripped a ball into center to score Perez. Blake added the third run of the inning when he stole home and the Monarchs had work to do.

They would not stop there as just two innings later, Milwaukee found a pair of runs. Perez singled and then Griffin Doersching doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Just a batter later, Blake did his job with a sac fly and Perez scored for the second time in the game. The Milkmen added another tally as Wendell Merrero hit an RBI double and it was a 5-0 lead.

Kansas City cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as Luken Baker laced a solo homer into center field to give the group a little bit of momentum.

Milwaukee reestablished a five-run advantage with a tally in the bottom of the fourth and Kansas City needed a spark. That’s exactly what they got in the top of the sixth as Austin Callahan opened up the frame with a base hit. Baker was at it again when he smashed an RBI double into left field. He finished the day going 2-3 with three runs and a pair of RBI’s. After two straight outs, Sahid Valenzuela registered an RBI knock and the lead was cut down to three.

Geison Urbaez earned the start on the bump and and went five innings with a strikeout. He was relieved by Jacob Gomez who allowed only one hit in two innings.

Hudson Head arrived on the scene in the seventh when his only hit of the afternoon was a homer into left field and the Monarchs kept chipping away at the deficit.

After being down the entire game, Kansas City was able to muscle in two runs to tie up the game in the eighth. Baker walked, Grant Richardson singled, and then Garza lifted a sac fly and Baker tagged up from third. Valenzuela sent home Richardson with a sharply hit grounder up the middle and the game was at six apiece.

Unfortunately, the Milkmen would score the winning run in the bottom of the frame on an Alec Olund base hit that scored Blake.

Although the Monarchs fell this afternoon, they still grabbed a much needed series win and will now return home to take on the Lincoln Saltdogs for a three-game set. The first pitch will be at 6:35 at Legends Field
