Richardson’s Heroics Lift Monarchs Over Milwaukee

Milwaukee, WI — Just when you thought the Monarchs were going to be shutout for the second night in a row, Grant Richardson cranked a two-run homer in the eighth inning as Kansas City grabbed a 3-1 win over Milwaukee.

The Milkmen’s lone run came in the opening frame as Yordys Valdes drew a walk to get on base. After he stole second, Griffin Doersching ripped a liner into center field and Valdes raced home to score. Kansas City shut them down the rest of the way as they held them to a pair of hits in the next eight innings.

That was largely due to the best Monarch pitching performance we have seen this season and it was Platte City native, Sawyer Allen. Austin Krob was tossed in the second inning as Allen stepped on the bump and the rest was history. He allowed one hit over the next seven frames while dealing in nine punch outs and completely shut out the first place team in the league. The 22 year old has an extremely bright future and will surely be a key piece to this rotation for the weeks to come.

Once again, the Monarchs were collecting hits, but could not send anyone home and finished the night with 11 left on base. They had runners in scoring position in the second, fourth, sixth, and seventh inning. The frustration was building, but the game was not over yet.

Everything changed in the eighth frame as Saul Garza opened up the inning with a walk. The Monarchs were desperate to tie up the game and thats when Grant Richardson came calling. He saw a 2-1 pitch and belted his team-leading 18th homer of the season. This was potentially a season-changing moment for Kansas City given the circumstances.

The Monarchs were not done yet as Brady Lindsly walked to open up the ninth frame. After two straight outs, Lindsly found himself at third and then Luken Baker lined a ball into left center to add a much needed insurance run.

Durbin Feltman recorded his sixth save this season and KC grabbed a huge win in the opening game of the series. They will look to take the set with Milwaukee tomorrow night at 6:30.
