Tostado’s Homer Lifts Monarchs To 10-Inning Win

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Kansas City Monarchs got the last word in a back-and-forth thriller, outlasting the Sioux Falls Canaries 6-5 in a 10-inning nail-biter from Sioux Falls Stadium Wednesday night.

Frankie Tostado hit a two-run home run on the first pitch of the 10th inning that held up as the game winner after the Birds tied the game in the ninth with a two-run shot of their own.

“It’s been a rough road trip, and we were like, ‘We’re over this. We’re better than this,'” Tostado said. “So all the guys just really beared down and were like ‘OK, we’re not losing this game.'”

The win snaps a 1-4 skid for Kansas City (13-10) who will meet Sioux Falls for a rubber game Thursday afternoon at 4:05 p.m.

Jackson Goddard set the tone for the Monarchs on the mound, throwing six innings of one-run ball in his best start of the season. The right-hander allowed just two hits, walking two and striking out three.

Canaries starter Ryan Zimmerman didn’t allow a run over his first five frames to keep pace with Goddard.

Travis Swaggerty tied the game in the sixth for Kansas City with a solo home run, his second of the season. The Monarchs added another run in the inning when Josh Bissonette scored from third on a Trent Giambrone grounder, beating the throw to the plate.

Sioux Falls cut the lead to one in the bottom of the seventh, but Herbert Iser put Kansas City up 4-2 with an RBI single in the eighth. It was part of a great night for the Monarchs catcher, who threw out three attempted base stealers in the game.

Zimmerman was charged with three runs in six-plus innings. He allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out four.

Trevor Achenbach tied the game in the ninth for Sioux Falls, hitting his fifth home run of the year off Monarchs closer Jackson McClelland.

That set the stage for Tostado’s home run.

“It’s a smaller park here, the wind was blowing straight out,” Tostado said. “I just felt like I didn’t need to do too much; I just needed to put a good swing on it and just try to drive the ball back-side.”

McClelland stayed in the game in the tenth, getting the final three outs and receiving the win.

“I think the boys are in a good spot,” Tostado said. “Once everybody starts hitting at the same time we’ll go back to putting up a lot of runs, lots of hits, and this game is going to be come a lot more fun for us.”

Monarchs Sign Speedster Amaral

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Kansas City Monarchs will have another new bat when they return to Legends Field.

Kansas City announced the loan signing of outfielder Danny Amaral from Acereros de Monclava from the Mexican League on Wednesday afternoon. The 27-year-old joins the Monarchs with 14 RBI in 34 LMB games this season.

Amaral is batting leadoff for the Monarchs’ game with the Sioux Falls Canaries Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. He will be available to make his home debut against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks this Friday at 6:35 pm.

The former Pittsburgh Pirates draft pick has already played 85 games in the American Association and has made a huge impact. Amaral led the AAPB with 48 stolen bases with the Sioux City Explorers back in 2022.

Amaral starred for the Explorers, breaking the franchise record for steals and finishing with the third best OPS of X’s that appeared in north of 30 games.

Amaral hit .295 with Sioux City, leading the Explorers in two major categories. The Southern California native logged a club-best five triples to go along with his aforementioned 48 swipes.

The outfielder stayed close to home for college, playing three stellar years at UCLA. Amaral played with six current major leaguers with the Bruins, still making a big name for himself.

Amaral led UCLA in stolen bases in 2017 and 2018, also leading the PAC-12 in swipes in 2017. He was named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team in 2018, playing all 55 games in center field.

Amaral reached as high as Double-A Altoona in the Pirates organization. He spent 2023 with the Colorado Rockies’ farm system.

Monarchs Fall In Series Opener

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Hayden Jones hit his third home run and Frankie Tostado collected two hits, but the Kansas City Monarchs lost 9-1 to the Sioux Falls Canaries in the first game of a three-game series from Sioux Falls Stadium Tuesday night.

The Canaries (14-7) scored two in the first and four in the third inning to take control against Monarchs starter Yefry Ramirez.

Jones’ homer in the eighth was the only Monarchs run of the night.

Kansas City (12-10) and Sioux Falls meet again Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m.

Ramirez allowed six runs on five hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Nate Tellier took over in the sixth, throwing two scoreless innings before allowing a three-run home run to Jordan Barth to bring the game to its final score.

Canaries starter Seth Miller threw eight innings of one-run baseball in the second-longest outing of his pro career. He allowed six hits and one walk while striking out six.

Monarchs Drop Heartbreaker In Extras

GARY Ind. — The Kansas City Monarchs were one out away from sending the game to the 11th, but lost in walk-off fashion to the Gary SouthShore RailCats Sunday afternoon from The Steel Yard.

Marcos Gonzalez scored the winning run for Gary SouthShore (7-15) after a throwing error from Monarchs third baseman Cameron Cannon on the final play of the game. The Monarchs (12-9) lost the rubber game of the three-game road series.

Herbert Iser and Ross Adolph hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning to give the Monarchs the lead.

The homers backed up five strong innings from Kansas City starter Connor Curlis. The left-hander allowed one run on four hits, walking three and striking out two.

Gary SouthShore tied the game in the eighth on an RBI bloop single from LG Castillo, making the game 2-2.

Kansas City had a man on third with one out in the top of the 10th, but failed to score.

The RailCats bunted bonus runner Gonzalez to third for the first out of their half of the 10th. After a pop fly for the second out, designated hitter Carlos Rincon hit a hard ground ball to Cannon, who fielded it on the backhand. His throw was too short for first baseman Frankie Tostado, who was unable to come up with the pick. Gonzalez scored to end the game.
