Monarchs Belt Three Homers to Cruise Past Canaries

Sioux Falls, IA — Three different Monarchs cranked a home run as Kansas City grabbed their fifth-straight win with a 7-2 victory against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Friday night.

This was the first time the Monarchs were back at the Birdcage since June 14th and they came out swinging in the second frame. Four pitches into the inning, Grant Richardson connected on his 20th homer and now leads the team in that category. Two batters later, Sahid Valenzuela earned his first jack of the season when he smoked a ball into right field to double the lead.

The Canaries cultivated a quick response in the bottom of the second and with two outs, Trevor Achenbach smacked a solo blast to cut the lead in half.

Michael Mariot stepped on the bump tonight and threw two K’s in six innings of work. Tyler Myrick and Jack Walker each threw a pair as well and Jeff Hakanson finished the night on the mound.

Kansas City threw a quick punch in the third inning as Austin Callahan tripled with two outs and then Luken Baker sent him home on a liner into center field.

Callahan’s night was just beginning when the fifth inning came around and he made his mark. He was in an 0-2 hole and then laced a two-run shot to right field while notching his 12th homer this season.

Sioux Falls grabbed a run in the bottom half of the fifth on a Joe Vos RBI single to bring home Achenbach, but that would be the final time they would cross home plate tonight.

The Seventh frame came around and the Monarchs continued to produce on the offensive side. Tyler Gentry and Baker walked while Callahan singled to load up the bases. All Richardson had to do was put a ball in play and thats exactly what he did as he reached base via fielder’s choice and Gentry got home.

This was a 6-2 game, but KC made sure to add one tally with an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Richardson grabbed his second hit of the night and then swiped a bag to put himself in scoring position. Saul Garza arrived to the party as he ripped a liner to left field and brought home Richardson to close out the night on top.

KC now has won six of their past seven games and holds a 3.5 game lead against Winnipeg. They will look to grab their third-straight series win with a 5:35 first pitch tomorrow night.
