STAFF

Joe Calfapietra

Joe Calfapietra

Field Manager

One of the most successful managers in baseball, Joe Calfapietra returns for his seventh season with the Monarchs in 2024. The Philadelphia native has won three Miles Wolff Cup titles in Kansas City, in 2018, 2021 and 2023. He won the American Association’s Manager of the Year award in 2018 and 2021.

Before arriving in KC, Calfapietra managed the New Jersey Jackals, making six finals appearances and winning two CanAm League Manager of the Year awards. Calfapietra is currently under contract with the Monarchs through 2027.

Bill Sobbe

Bill Sobbe

Hitting Coach, Third Base Coach

Bill Sobbe joined the Monarchs coaching staff in 2012. He became the club’s pitching coach in 2014, and moved to hitting coach for the 2021 season.

A native of Gladstone, Missouri, Sobbe played college ball at Northwest Missouri State. A catcher, he played three years in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization from 1979 to 1981.

He became an educator in the Kansas City area in 1982, including serving over 15 years as an administrator in the Park Hill School District from 1998 to 2013. Sobbe is currently in his sixth season as an assistant baseball coach at Park University in Parkville, Missouri.

Justin Shafer

Justin Shafer

Pitching Coach

The 31-year-old Shafer played in the major leagues for parts of three seasons. He suited up for the Blue Jays in 2018 and 2019 and played briefly for the Marlins in 2020. He owns 46 MLB strikeouts in 53.2 innings of work, all as a reliever.

Shafer was a starting pitcher with the Monarchs’ championship team in 2021. The right-hander took the ball for Game 2 of the league finals that season, which the Monarchs won 7-5 over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks as part of an undefeated postseason.

The Blue Jays drafted Shafer in the eighth round out of Florida, where he played for three seasons. He played in the prestigious Arizona Fall League in 2015 and 2016. In 2019, Shafer earned International League Mid-Season All-Star honors while with Triple-A Buffalo.

Frank White

Frank White

First Base Coach

One of the greatest players to ever don a Kansas City Royals uniform, Frank White joined the Monarchs’ coaching staff in 2012.

A five-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove award winner, White is one of two Royals players to have his number (20) retired by the club. White compiled 2,006 hits over 18 MLB seasons, all with the Royals.

White also has a seat on the national advisory board of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

John West

John West

Clubhouse & Equipment Manager, Bench Coach

West enters his 12th season with the Monarchs organization in 2024. He joined the club in 2013 as clubhouse manager, equipment manager and first base coach.

West is the reigning American Association Clubhouse Manager of the Year.

West retired from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department in 2012 after 27 years of service. West has also coaches a variety of sports at North Kansas City High School, his alma mater, including a state champion girls’ basketball team in 2019.

West’s time in a baseball dugout started when he was a bat boy for the Kansas City Royals from 1977 to 1984. West and his wife Carolyn have been married for 35 years. They have three children and one grandson.

Jared Bashaw

Jared Bashaw

Athletic Trainer

2024 will be Bashaw‘s fifth season as the Monarchs’ primary athletic trainer. A native of Udall, Kansas, he received his bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Emporia State University.

In the offseason Bashaw works at Sano Orthopedics. He also provides coverage for multiple club teams in the area in a variety of sports. He enjoys spending time with friends, his fiancée and her son and loves disc golf.
