Monarchs Drop Opener With RailCats

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Kansas City Monarchs came up short in a hectic series opener. The Gary SouthShore RailCats outlasted Kansas City in an 8-5 drama-filled affair.

Eight of the game’s 13 runs came across with two outs. The result knocks Kansas City (26-16) out of first place in the American Association West Division.

Kansas City trailed 5-2 after the top of the fourth inning. The Monarchs’ bottom of the lineup willed a comeback to tie the game up.

Seven hitter Alvaro Gonzalez demolished a solo home run in the fourth inning, hedging the lead to 5-3. Nine hitter Joshuan Sandoval led off the fifth inning with a double and scored off a Jaylyn Williams RBI groundout.

Eight hitter Josh Bissonette knotted the game at 5 with an RBI single in the sixth inning.

Key doubles by Elvis Peralta and L.G. Castillo plated three runs in the eighth inning off Patrick Pridgen (1-1) 

The RailCats’ (11-32) deciding runs all scored with two outs. 

Pridgen threw three scoreless innings in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to keep the Monarchs in the fight. The right-hander hurled five innings with five runs against.
