LONG LIVE THE LONG BALL IN LINCOLN

The Kansas City Monarchs (33-17) slugged home runs number 103, 104, and 105 on the season in a close call on the road against the Lincoln Saltdogs (25-24). Casey Gillaspie played a huge factor in the game with his glove and his two-home-run night.

The Saltdogs jumped out in front in the Monarchs fourth consecutive road game on Friday night with a run in the bottom of the second inning.

The Monarchs offense was able to easily combat the early 1-0 deficit with three consecutive innings with one run in each the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Catcher J.C. Escarra drove in the Monarchs first run in the fourth inning on a single that scored Willie Abreu. The next two innings were both long-ball innings for Kansas City. Jan Hernandez mashed his 20th homer of the season to give the visiting Monarchs a 2-1 lead. A few minutes later Casey Gillaspie would add a moonshot of his own to add to the lead (3-1).

After surrendering a run in the second inning, Monarchs starter Matt Hartman would go on a tear by throwing up four scoreless frames in a row. The righty showed the entire Lincoln crowd just why he was selected to compete in the American Association All-Star game next week in Chicago. Hartman would finish the game with 6IP, 1R, 3BB, 7K, and just two hits.

A lead, especially on the road, can never be too safe, and the Monarchs offense knows that. It was only right that Casey Gillaspie would go deep again for Kansas City, making it his second homer on the night, and it gave his team a larger lead at 4-1.

The “salty dogs”, however, would make things extremely interesting in their last call during the bottom of the ninth inning. Jameson McGrane was called on out of the Monarchs bullpen to seal the deal, but the first three Lincoln hitters reached base before Kansas City could get an out. Hunter Clanin would shoot a single into the outfield to cut the Monarchs lead down to 4-2. With runners on and still nobody out, the Monarchs needed a stop. The man for the job was Casey Gillaspie, continuing his terrific evening. The left-handed first baseman would make the biggest defensive play of the evening by recording a 3-6 double play. The very next batter would be sat down on strikes by Jameson McGrane to complete the series opener victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs (4-2).

The Monarchs will continue their series with the Saltdogs tomorrow evening up in Lincoln  with game time at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pre-game beginning at 6:35 p.m. and the video stream airing on aabaseball.tv.

MONARCHS COME UP SHORT OF SWEEP

The Kansas City Monarchs (32-17) drop game three to the Cleburne Railroaders (16-33) as they come back from behind but surrender the lead in the bottom of the tenth, getting walked off with a final of 12-11.

The Monarchs trailed by as much as six twice throughout the game but managed to tie it at 10-10 in the top of the eighth and continued to keep it a close game until a 2 RBI walk-off from Eddie Arroyo sealed Kansas City’s fate.

The Railroaders got on the board first in the bottom of the third as Hector Sanchez singled; then Nick Shumpert doubled to left field, and an Arroyo sacrifice fly brought in Sanchez, bringing the score 1-0 going into the fourth.

In back-to-back innings, Cleburne rounded the bases as Zach Nehrir to lead off the inning before stealing second and heading to third on a fly out from Chase Simpson. Hill Alexander sent one to center field for a two-run home run, adding to the Railroaders score, 3-0.

The Railroaders weren’t done adding to the scoreboard in the fifth as Jacob Bockelie got a base hit before Arroyo doubled to right field and Chuck Taylor launched a home run to right field to double Cleburne’s lead at 6-0.

The Monarchs were held to just five hits through five innings with base runners Gaby Guerrero and Kevin Santa both going 2-2 but being stranded both times.

David Thompson got the Monarchs on the board in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to left field to make it 6-1 in favor of Railroaders. A pitching change for Cleburne to Danny Zardon did not stop Casey Gillaspie from hitting a two-run home run to bring in Jan Hernandez, cutting the Railroaders lead in half at 6-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kacy Clemens hit a ground-rule double before an Alexander base hit, bringing Clemens home for an RBI. An error from third baseman Thompson advanced Sanchez to first and Alexander landed at third base. Jacob Bockelie singled, bringing in Alexander for another run, and Sanchez filled the spot at third. A sac-fly from Arroyo brought in one last RBI for the Railroaders in the sixth and took back a six run lead, 9-3.

In the top of the seventh, Cleburne would turn to Kevin McCarthy out of the bull pen, and the Monarchs promptly load the bases against the Railroader reliever. Alexis Olmeda singled to center field before Darnell Sweeney and Thompson were both walked. A fielder’s choice got Jan Hernandez out at first base but brought in Olmeda for an RBI. Matt Adams then doubled and cleared the bases, adding two more to the Monarchs tally before the Railroaders initiated another pitching change with the score at 9-6. Cleburne’s new reliever, Austin Fairchild, immediately gave up a two-run home run to Guerrero, bringing the Monarchs within one at 9-8.

It was homer after homer for both sides of the ball as Chase Simpson sent a solo shot to right-center field to give the Railroaders a bit of a buffer at 10-8.

Alexis Olmeda singled to start off the top of the eighth before Sweeney hit a ball out to left field for a two-run home run, tying the game at 10-10.

The Railroaders had a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth, but a crucial strikeout from Brandon Koch ended the inning, the game still tied. Monarchs were retired in order in the top of the ninth by Hunter Cervenka. Cleburne managed to get two runners on with two outs with back-to-back walks but Monarch’s closer Jameson McGrane retired Alexander on a ground ball back to the mound to send the game to extra innings.

With Guerrero on base at second under the American Association extra-inning rule, Pete Kozma reached on an error from the second baseman Arroyo scoring Guerrero, putting the Monarchs up one at 11-10 heading into the bottom of the tenth. Arroyo would avenge the error in the bottom of the tenth. With runners at second and third and two outs he would deliver a bases clearing RBI single to center field that would end the Monarchs five-game winning streak.

Monarchs starting pitcher Jon Harris went 4.1 IP, with 6 H, 6 R and 4 strikeouts versus Railroaders starter Kody Bullard who went 5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R and 6 strikeouts.

The Monarchs have a day off Thursday before starting a new three-game road series against the Lincoln Saltdogs on Friday (7/8). The Monarchs look for the series sweep with the first pitch at 7:06 p.m. and can be heard on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pre-game beginning at 6:36 p.m. and the video stream airing on aabaseball.tv.

KC & CLE GO BACK AND FORTH

While not as big of a boom as last night’s ending, Jan Hernandez once again brought late fireworks over the Fourth of July weekend as his late-game heroics propelled the Monarchs (31-16) to a win, defeating the Cleburne Railroaders (15-32) in game one of the away series. The matchup was a back-and-forth dogfight all the way through, with only one inning with no runs scored, but Kansas City came out on top late, 10-9.

The Monarchs struck early in this holiday showdown as Darnell Sweeney led off the game with a walk from Cleburne starter Garrett Alexander; then he would reach second base three pitches later on a fly ball to left field off the bat of Kevin Santa to put a Monarch in scoring position in the first. Third baseman David Thompson would then capitalize on Sweeney’s efforts with an RBI double, giving the Monarchs an early lead. Gaby Guerrero would then step in and smack an RBI single, scoring Thompson and setting the score at 2-0 Monarchs before the turn of the inning. In the bottom half, Monarchs starting pitcher Akeem Bostick would allow the first two Cleburne batters to reach base, but he would then retire the next three without allowing a run, capping the inning off with a four pitch strikeout.

The Monarchs stayed on Alexander in the second, as shortstop Pete Kozma led the inning off with a double before moving to third base, thanks to a single from the next man in the order, Chad De La Guerra. Darnell Sweeney continued his hot streak when he came to the plate and hit a two-RBI double, scoring both Kozma and De La Guerra. The next batter in the order, Kevin Santa, would hit a single to the left that would allow Sweeney time to round the bases and make it home, bringing the score to 5-0 in the second inning. In the home half, the Railroaders began to head down the right track. Bostick allowed a single to each of the first three batters, loading the bases for Nick Shumpert, who promptly became the fourth batter to hit a grand slam off of a Monarchs pitcher this season, cutting the Kansas City lead to one. Bostick would then strike out two of the next four batters, retiring three of them and escaping the inning without any more damage.

In the third, back-to-back one-out walks from Casey Gillaspie and Pete Kozma and a single from Chad De La Guerra would load the bases for Kansas City, but then back-to-back punchouts would leave them that way. In the bottom half, back-to-back singles would put runners at the corners for Cleburne. Hunter Wolfe then bounced into a double play but Hill Alexander would score from third, tying the game at five.

The fourth also proved eventful, as the Monarchs’ half yielded an RBI double from Gaby Guerrero that scored Kevin Santa, giving KC the lead once again, 6-5. In the bottom half, an unorthodox triple to center field from Edwin Arroyo would put him in scoring position, and he would score two pitches later on a wild pitch, tying the game once more. Later in the inning, a walk and a stolen base from Zach Nehrir would put him in scoring position at second base, and Kacy Clemens would capitalize with an RBI single, giving Cleburne their first lead of the game with the score 7-6.

The Monarchs wouldn’t allow the lead to change for long, however, as Chad De La Guerra would lead the top half of the fifth off with a solo home run to knot the score at seven. In the bottom half, Akeem Bostick would call it a night as Justin Donatella would enter at the beginning of the half inning and record the first 1-2-3 inning of the contest, which would be followed by six more straight outs in the sixth.

In the top half of the seventh, a Pete Kozma walk broke the streak of 1-2-3 innings, but the Monarchs were unable to cash in. For the Railroaders, a trio of singles would plate Kacy Clemens and give the Railroaders an 8-7 lead.

In the eighth, the Monarchs would get two on the bases but Cleburne reliever Austin Fairchild would keep them stranded, holding the one run Railroaders lead as the teams headed to the bottom of the eighth. Offensively, the Railroaders’ Edwin Arroyo would draw a leadoff walk, and then steal both second and third. This allowed Chase Simpson’s single to score Arroyo, giving Cleburne a much needed insurance run late, as the Railroaders now held a two-run 9-7 lead.

To begin the ninth inning, Railroaders closer Nick Gardewine would enter in and walk the first two batters he faced, giving Kansas City the go-ahead run at the plate with no outs. After a flyout and a pinch hit strikeout, Darnell Sweeney stepped up and was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Kevin Santa with two away. Santa drew a 3-2 walk to score one and bring none other than Jan Hernandez to the plate, just a day after his electrifying walkoff grand slam. Similarly to the night before, Hernandez drew the count to 3-2 with 2 outs and the bases loaded with himself as the last chance for the Monarchs. Also similarly to the night before, Hernandez delivered. This time, with a two-RBI single that gave the Monarchs a 10-9 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth. In the bottom half, Jameson McGrane came on to slam the door, and after a Hunter Wolfe single, he was helped out by a great play at the warning track by left fielder Darnell Sweeney to save extra bases and a run. The next batter, Jan Hernandez would fittingly catch the final out in center field, sealing the win for the Monarchs in the ninth.

The Monarchs take on the Railroaders again tomorrow (7/4) for game two of the series. The Monarchs look for the series win with the first pitch at 7:06 p.m. and can be heard on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pre-game beginning at 6:36 p.m. and the video stream airing on aabaseball.tv.

FIREWORKS FOR KC WITH WALKOFF WIN

The Kansas City Monarchs (30-16) made it back-to-back nights with fireworks for 4th of July weekend, except this time they were on the field instead of in the air after a walkoff grand slam gave Kansas City the win and the sweep over the Gary SouthShore RailCats (20-27).

Monarchs starting pitcher Nick Belzer started the game off on the right track with a three-batter inning with the help of a zero out double play. This set the Monarchs up for success in the bottom half, where Darnell Sweeney took the first pitch of the game for the Monarchs offense to the right field Home Run Hill, giving Kansas City an early 1-0 lead.

In the second, the RailCats offense showed a little more life. Victor Nova led the inning off with a fly ball to center that got lost in the sun, giving him a leadoff double. This was followed by a Jesus Marriaga single to score Nova, evening the score at one. Belzer would then record a strikeout and flyout in the next two batters, and pick Marriaga off at first base to end the inning.

The RailCats would stay on Belzer in the top of the third, leading off the inning with a single from Jackson Smith and a double from Alec Olund, giving Gary runners at the corners with no outs. Smith would attempt to go home on a ground ball to Monarchs third baseman David Thompson, but a great heads up play from Thompson would nab him at the plate, keeping the score tied while Olund advanced to third. A sac fly to center by Daniel Lingua would give the RailCats their first lead of the series before Belzer would escape the inning without any more damage. In the bottom half, the Monarchs offense would once again begin to come together. A leadoff single from Darnell Sweeney would set him up to swipe his 19th bag of the season, tying the league lead. Two batters later, Matt Adams would fly out to center field, advancing Sweeney to third. Next man up David Thompson would then deliver with a two-out RBI single over the second baseman to score Sweeney and even the score at two before the turn of the inning.

In the top of the fourth, Belzer got back on track and retired the side in three batters for the first time since the first. Unfortunately for the Monarchs, this would be the theme of the inning, as RailCats starter Adam Heidenfelder would return the 1-2-3 favor to the Monarchs bats.

In the fifth, the RailCats’ Alec Olund hit a one-out triple that would set Thomas Walraven up with an RBI opportunity. Walraven would take advantage of this and then some with a deep two-run home run to left, putting the RailCats ahead 4-2. The Monarchs wouldn’t let the RailCats escape the inning unscathed, however, as they led off the bottom half of the sixth with back-to-back doubles from Sweeney and Kevin Santa, bringing Kansas City within one, 4-3.

Jordan Martinson would relieve Nick Belzer to begin the sixth inning for the Monarchs, and would record a perfect 1-2-3 inning. In the bottom half, the Monarchs would make some noise on the bases with a single and a walk but would strand Willie Abreu at third base to end the inning.

The seventh and the eighth would not provide any fireworks on Fourth of July eve, as only two batters would reach base over the two innings, both by way of the walk.

Jameson McGrane would come on in the top of the ninth and allow a leadoff single to Victor Nova, but he would then strike out the next three batters to strand him on the bases, handing the Monarchs bats a one run deficit entering the bottom of the ninth. After the first two Monarchs of the inning were sat down in order, the next two, Matt Adams and David Thompson, reached base after being hit by pitches. This brought first baseman Casey Gillaspie to the plate with the game on the line. Gillaspie hit a backhand ground ball to shortstop Daniel Lingua, who overthrew first baseman Chris Burgess to score Adams, evening the score at four and sending the game to the tenth inning.

McGrane remained on the bump for the top of the tenth, except this time with a runner at second base for the extra-innings rule. [How runner reached third] Then, he would attempt to score on a ground ball to second baseman Kevin Santa, but Santa would deliver a bullet to catcher J.C. Escarra to nab him at the plate and keep the score tied. In the bottom half, Gaby Guerrero would begin the inning at second base but would remain there after back-to-back strikeouts to begin the inning. With two outs, the RailCats opted to intentionally walk Darnell Sweeney to get to Kevin Santa, who was then unintentionally walked on a 3-2 count, bringing all star Jan Hernandez to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. In the clutch situation, Hernandez did what Hernandez does, and sent a deep drive to right field for a walkoff grand slam, sending a roar through Legends Field and giving the Monarchs the win and the sweep.

The Monarchs hit the road tomorrow (7/4) as they face the Cleburne Railroaders for a three-game series. The Fourth of July matchup starts at 7:06 p.m. and can be heard on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pre-game beginning at 6:36 p.m. and the video stream airing on aabaseball.tv.

ALL-STARS SHINE BRIGHT

Kansas City Monarchs’ All-Stars, Matt Hartman and Matt Adams, led the Monarchs to a dominant, 10-3 victory over the Gary SouthShore Railcats. Hartman and Adams led the way with their respective nine strikeouts and two home runs. Adams’ two home runs on the night brought his total to four in the past four games and added to his league leading total of 19 on the year.

In the first inning, Matt Hartman, the All-Star pitcher who received the start for the Monarchs, held the Railcats scoreless in the first frame. Hartman picked up two of his nine strikeouts on the night in the top of the first. Nick Garcia, the All-Star pitcher for the Railcats, dealt a scoreless first inning and only faced three batters, recording two strikeouts. Darnell Sweeney reached first with a hard hit single but was caught stealing following a Casey Gillaspie strikeout.

Hartman continued his strong performance on the mound in the top of the second by retiring the side in one, two, three fashion. In the bottom of the second the fireworks started early at Legends Field. Matt Adams kicked off the July 4th weekend celebrations with a deep blast over the left field wall to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead, his first of two home runs on the night. Gaby Guerrero reached first base with a fielders’ choice following a David Thompson walk. With Guerrero on first, Chad De La Guerra roped a hard hit between the Railcats shortstop to put two runners on with only one out. Pete Kozma brought home Guerrero with an RBI double to right field. Alexis Olmeda stepped to the plate to provide the grand finale for the second inning with a crushed, three-run home run over the left field wall. The Monarchs led 5-0 heading into the third inning.

In the third inning, Hartman once again added to his strikeout total, striking out two of the four batters he faced and holding the Railcats hitless. In the home half of the third, Garcia surrendered three more runs to the Monarchs. Jan Hernandez reached first to start the inning with a single, and after recording one out, Garcia walked the next two batters he faced to load the bases. Kozma, following a lineout from De La Guerra, poured on the runs with a bases clearing RBI double that snuck past the right fielder to the corner. Garcia escaped the inning by securing a pop out from Alexis Olmeda, leaving the Monarchs up 8-0 after three innings played.

Hartman and Garcia both recorded one strikeout in the fourth inning on their way to their respective one, two, three innings on the mound. In the fifth, Hartman continued his quick efforts on the mound, striking out two of three en route to another scoreless inning. In the bottom of the fifth, the Monarchs added to their lead with the American Association home run leader and All-star, Matt Adams, blasting another solo shot, this time over the right field wall. Garcia allowed one more run in the inning via a sacrifice fly from Pete Kozma, following two singles from Thompson and De La Guerra. The Monarchs pushed their lead to 10-0 heading into the top of the sixth behind Kozma’s fifth RBI of the night.

In Hartman’s final inning of work, the Railcats finally found their way across the plate. Following Daniel Lingua’s hit by pitch at-bat, Victor Nova hit a two run home run to right field. Hartman picked up his eight and ninth strikeouts on the night and brought the inning to a close with the Monarchs leading 10-2. Hartman finished the night with six innings pitched, three hits allowed, nine strikeouts, 2 walks, and two earned runs. In the bottom of the sixth, Garcia slowed the Monarchs offense down and held them scoreless, retiring three out four and allowing no hits in his final inning of work. Garcia finished with six innings pitched, ten hits allowed, five strikeouts, three walks, and ten earned runs.

In the seventh inning, the Monarchs made a plethora of defensive substitutions, replacing Pete Kozma with Kevin Santa, and Willie Abreu replacing David Thompson. Darnell Sweeney moved to third base while Abreu filled in in left field, and on the mound Brock Gilliam replaced Matt Hartman. Gilliam allowed a one-out, solo home run to Chris Burgess before settling in and retiring the side. The Monarchs looked to add to their lead in the seventh following a one-out double from Gaby Guerrero. Kansas City was not able to capitalize with a runner in scoring position on the Railcats’ reliever, Ryan Campbell. Campbell forced a flyout and groundout to end the inning and hold their deficit at eight heading into the eighth.

In the top of the eighth, Brock Gilliam retired the Railcats in order, ending the inning with back to back strikeouts. In the bottom of the eighth, the Railcats’ Campbell held the Monarchs’ scoreless in spite of a leadoff walk from Darnell Sweeney.

Kansas City called upon Cam Hill, from the Swope Health bullpen, to close the door on Gary SouthShore in the top of the ninth. Hill struck out two of the first three batters he faced and retired the side in one, two, three fashion to secure the series win.

The final game of the three game series against the Gary SouthShore RailCats is tomorrow afternoon (7/3) at 3:00 p.m. The game can be heard on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pre-game beginning at 2:30 p.m. and the video stream airing on aabaseball.tv.

HARRIS HOLDS ON FOR FIRST COMPLETE GAME

Jon Harris achieved the first Kansas City complete game of the season and helped put the Monarchs (28-16) back in the win column after almost completing a shutout against the Gary SouthShore RailCats (20-25) in a 6-1 win.

In the third inning J.C. Escarra hit a single to left field, getting to second and third after back-to-back putouts from Darnel Sweeney and Kevin Santa. Jan Hernandez walked to first base before Matt Adams singled to center field to bring in Santa for an RBI, the score at 1-0.

The same couldn’t be said for Gary as the bases were quiet and they couldn’t reach base through the first four innings courtesy of Monarchs starting pitcher Jon Harris.

The Monarchs toured the bases in the fifth inning as the top half of the order were all walked on base, with Gaby Guerrero being awarded an RBI, the score 3-0. Gillaspie continued to reach base, going two for three, with a fielder’s choice to center field, adding onto the Monarchs score at 4-0.

The RailCats reliever Steven Colon continued to walk the Monarchs in the sixth. Escarra walked and Sweeney singled to right field before Santa walked again. A sacrifice fly from Hernandez brought in Escarra before a fielder’s choice from Adams scored Sweeney, extending the Monarchs lead to 6-0 going into the seventh.

Gary SouthShore finally got on the board in the top of the ninth as Ryan Lingua singled to left field before Jesus Marriaga went to deep right-center field for an RBI, bringing the final score to 6-1.

Harris ended his nine complete innings with 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB and 6 strikeouts. It was the first complete game for the Monarchs since Justin Donatella tossed a complete game shut out last August 19th against the Sioux City X’s at Legends Field.

Game two against the Gary SouthShore RailCats is tomorrow night (7/2) at 6:00 p.m. The game can be heard on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pre-game beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the video stream airing on aabaseball.tv.

MONARCHS MISS THE STATION

Thursday night was the Chase Simpson show. The Railroaders third baseman finished the night 4-5 with three home runs and six RBIs. His incredible performance helped the Cleburne Railroaders (14-29) defeat the Kansas City Monarchs (27-16) in a commanding 14-5 victory at Legends Field.

Cleburne jumped on the scoreboard early as Chase Simpson led off the second inning with a solo home run to center field.

Kevin Hilton started on the mound for the Railroaders. He was cruising through the first three innings, retiring nine straight batters. Hilton could not retire ten in a row as Matt Adams belted a towering home run to right-center field, marking his fourth long ball in the past five games. Gaby Guerrero immediately followed the solo shot with one of his own to give the Monarchs a 2-1 lead.

The Railroaders tied the ballgame at two in the fifth inning when Chuck Taylor drove an RBI-single to left field.

After a scoreless fifth from Kansas City, Cleburne started to pour it on the Monarchs in the sixth. Simpson led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, notching his second home run of the night. Four hits, three walks, and five runs later, Simpson stepped up and launched a grand slam over the home run patio to gather his third home run of the night. After the top half of the inning, the Railroaders led 12-2.

The Monarchs scored two runs the next two innings. Jan Hernandez hit a solo home run to left field in the sixth while Sweeney drove in Chad De La Guerra in the seventh as the Monarchs trailed 4-12.

Cleburne extended their lead in the top half of the eighth as Hector Sanchez hit a two-run bomb to center field, giving the Railroaders a 14-4 lead.

The Monarchs scored a run in the eighth inning when Matt Adams hammered an RBI-double to score Hernandez. After eight innings of baseball, Cleburne led 14-5 over Kansas City.

Michael Wong threw a scoreless ninth inning and retired Kevin Santa to end the game. The Railroaders won the four-game series, taking three of the four games against the Monarchs.

The Monarchs will continue their homestand tomorrow (7/1) as they face the Gary SouthShore RailCats in a three-game series. The game can be heard on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pre-game beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the video stream airing on aabaseball.tv.
