Kansas City Hands Saltdogs Series Loss behind a 12-Run Night

Kansas City, KS — It was a back-and-forth game, but the Monarchs were able to drive in a dozen runs to win 12-8 and take the series on Wednesday night.

The scoring started in the second inning as Hudson Head delivered a solo shot to open up the game. “Just trying to look for a pitch that hit and not trying to do too much with it. It was a good result and was trying to put a barrel on the ball and help the team.”

In the next frame, the Monarchs built on the lead as Tyler Gentry led off with a base hit while Austin Callahan walked. On Baker’s second at bat, he smoked his 18th bomb of the season to jump into a 4-0 lead. It’s a race to the top as Baker, Grant Richardson, and Saul Garza each have 18 homers apiece.

Just when you thought the Monarchs had all the momentum, the Saltdogs rallied off seven runs in the top of the fourth. Jairo Pomares opened up the frame with a solo homer into left while two more Saltdogs collected a base knock. That brought in Tanner O’Tremba who cranked a three-run blast to tie up this game. They would not stop there as Nick Shumpert and Pomares each collected RBI singles to bring Kansas City into a three-run deficit.

This was a 7-4 ballgame in the blink of an eye, but the Monarchs would not go away. In the fifth frame, Tyler Gentry and Callahan each got on base and then with one swing of the bat, Baker blasted a deep shot into left and tied the game. They would keep the train moving as Sahid Valenzuela registered a hit and then was driven home from Head. JD Davis arrived on the scene when he lined a ball into left field to bring home Head from first. It was a five-run inning and the Monarchs went up 9-7.

It was a bullpen day for Kansas City as they threw seven total pitchers and combined for seven K’s. The starter, Emmanuel Chapman led the team with three strikeouts of his own.

In the sixth, Gentry and Callahan both reached base and were brought home on a fielders choice and a passed ball. They added one more tally in the eighth on an RBI double from Sahid Valenzuela that brought home Saul Garza.

The Monarchs were able to get back in the series win column at home and will look to complete the sweep tomorrow night. KC is now a 1.5 game ahead of Winnipeg for first place and has a chance to build on that with the final game of the series. First pitch is at 6:35 with the Saltdogs on Thursday night.
